page behind it shows through. The pages have been covered in roses and
lavender. Three out of the four double sided pages have been filled with facts,
pictures and herbs. The last page is blank so you can add your own art and
words to your Beltane ritual.

Purpose
Beltane is the last of the three spring festivals. It is the time when the sun
is fully released from his bondage of winter and able to rule over summer and
life once again. People, plants and animals prepare for the warm months ahead.
During this time crops are still very young and susceptible to frost and
blight. The ancients believed that lighting warm bonfires encouraged the growth
of the Sun's warm light. This is why Beltane is sometimes called "Bel
Fire" which is the Celtic phrase to mean “Lord Fire”.
In the ancient world the first flowers that bloomed in early May were
considered a sacred sign of the returning bounty of the earth. Children were
commonly sent into nature to collect the first flowers of May.
As Samhain is about honoring Death, Beltane, its counter part, is about
honoring life, sexual union and fertility. In ancient cultures there was a
focus on the physical union of marriage during this time of year because it was
believed that during this time the goddess and the sun god were married and
united in love. The Maypole dance is an expression of human passions as young
men and women wrap the phallic symbol in ribbons as they dance around it.
Mounted Pages
These double sided Parchment Paper pages have been mounted onto a three hole punched backing. They are ready to be added to your Adjustable Book of Shadows. I invented them because I wanted scrapbook pages free from plastic sheet protectors. The pages are all 8 ½ by 11 inches. The 3 holes have been punched into an extra ½ inch strip on the side of the page. They make a wonderful crisp sound as you turn the pages. The pages are made of brand new Ivory Parchment Paper but look aged. All mounted page come with frayed edges and are stained with coffee, paint and charcoal. Your Book of Shadows will look like an old family heirloom.
